Benefits of Reading Music in Early Childhood
For anyone who believes that young children can not read music notation, press the button below to see two of my former students, twins, originally from Stoney Point, N.Y., whom I had the pleasure of introducing to the art of reading music in 2012-2014.
They began piano lessons with me in the summer before they entered PreK and studied with me for two years. At the end of the two years, Sophia and Sawyer could not only play duets together but sight read in the keys of C, G, D, F, and B-flat. Sadly (for me), they moved away with their family to California, where the following video was recorded.
Where is Sawyer today in 2025?
Sawyer received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and is in his first year as a cadet. He hopes to earn a pilot slot upon graduation. He brings his music along on travels to play piano wherever he finds one available and is teaching himself guitar.
Where is Sophia today in 2025?
Sophia is a freshman animal science major at
Texas A&M where she is in the Corps of Cadets
and plans to be an airline pilot.
During high school she taught piano to children.
